In the past, waterway transportation developed vitally due to natural condition of rivers and canals. As aresult, floating market has been opened right on the river as a unique form with specific cultural feature. Over the past decades, although roadway transportation has been gradually replaced, this kind of market on the river still exists for not only its beginning purpose but also tourist attraction.
Known as a famous market of Cantho City, Cai Rang Floating market attracts tourists because of its unique and interesting features. The market’s operation is on the the river. Its main merchandise includes local fruit and agricultural products. In the early morning, hundreds of boats and canoes gather in crowds for trading. On each bow of boat, the sellers hang their goods on a bamboo stick so that buyers are able to know what kinds of goods are being sold (instead of crying the seller’s goods). This bamboo stick is called “Beo stick” by the local people. You should hire a tourist boat at Ninh Kieu Quay to visit the floating market in early morning from 5 to 7 o’clock.
