Looking down on a map of the Mekong Delta, one of the most notable features is the extensive network of waterways, fanning out like so many long fingers. Not only does it add to the natural beauty of the region, these waterways are also its lifeline, irrigating countless fruit orchards and rice fields that make the Delta “The Rice Bowl of Vietnam”, providing a watery highway for transport and commerce, and feeding the people with an abundant variety of fish, crab and shrimp.
Crispy pumpkin flowers are amazing for the sweetness of the pumpkin, the crunchiness of the tempura, and the spicy kick from the watermelon wasabi dipping sauce. As an added benefit, they’re quite beautiful, adding a pop of color in the otherwise sea of green in Vietnamese markets.
One of the joys of the Mekong Delta is visiting small cottage industries that dot the region. Known as “The Rice Bowl” of Vietnam, people of the delta inevitably find themselves with a lot of time on their hands between the harvest seasons. While the rice fields need minimal tending between planting and harvesting, people still need to stay close to home. The intricate network of waterways also means easy transportation routes to deliver goods — everything from handicrafts to candies to food to bricks is made in the delta.
